10 Reasons Why the Resurrection of the Dead and Rapture of the Church Could Coincide with the December 2012 Mayan Calendar End of the Age

There is a general awareness regarding the infamous date December 21, 2012 marking the end of a long cycle on the Mayan calendar and fulfilling other prophecies. This date marks the winter solstice of 2012, and it is said it will end a period of 5,125 with a rare galactic and planetary alignment.

Many believe that this planetary alignment could set off a chain reaction of cataclysmic events on Earth due to increase solar activity and a polar shift. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis would result, causing major global destruction.

Does the Bible support this view? What follows are eight reasons why the future resurrection of the dead in Christ and rapture of the church could take place in conjunction with a global catastrophe similar to the one some predict for December 21, 2012.

1. Jesus Christ predicted there would be abnormal solar, lunar, and planetary activity prior to his second coming return to the earth:

Luk 21:25 "And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth nations will be in distress, anxious over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves.

2. In the very next verse, Jesus Christ predicted global fear, chaos, and ‘something’ that would be “coming on the earth” due to the shaking of the powers of the heavens:

Luk 21:26 People will be fainting from fear and from the expectation of what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

3. Jesus Christ predicted that the day of the Lord will be introduced with swift “sudden destruction” that would trap those on the earth:

Luk 21:34 “But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap.
Luk 21:35 For it will overtake all who live on the face of the whole earth.
Luk 21:36 But stay alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that must happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

4. Paul also predicted that the day of the Lord will be introduced with “sudden destruction” from which those on the earth will not be able to escape.

ITh 5:2 For you know quite well that the day of the Lord will come in the same way as a thief in the night.
ITh5:3 Now when they are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will surely not escape.

The Greek words used by Paul in explaining the quick destructive power that introduces the day of the Lord are the same used by Jesus when he was explaining the day of the Lord to his disciples.

5. Jesus compared his “lightning-quick” appearance to the days of two destructive events in history: 1) the destruction of the flood in the days of Noah, and 2) the destruction of the Sodom in the days of Lot:

Luk 17:26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so too it will be in the days of the Son of Man.
Luk 17:27 People were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage—right up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

Luk 17:28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot, people were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building;
Luk 17:29 but on the day Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.
Luk 17:30 It will be the same on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

Not only will earth’s inhabitants be shocked and taken by surprise, but according to Jesus Christ, they will experience a destructive event when Jesus Christ appears, just as those who experienced the events of the days of Noah and Lot.

6. The trumpet of God, also referred to as the last trumpet, will precede the resurrection of the dead in Christ and the rapture of the church.

Extensive research on the meaning of the last trumpet has led to the conclusion that it is actually the voice of God as it once shook Mount Sinai at the giving of the Ten Commandments, and will once more (the last trumpet) shake both the earth and the heavens:

Heb 12:26 Then his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “I will once more shake not only the earth but heaven too.”

7. The power of a resurrection of the dead into an immortal body is a powerful supernatural event that, three times in scripture, is described as causing earthquakes.

These three occurrences of earthquakes coinciding with a resurrection to immortal bodies include:

  1. Jesus Christ (Matthew 27:51)
  2. The “many saints” who rose at the time of his resurrection (Matthew 27:52-53)
  3. The two witnesses of the future (Revelation 11:7-13)

The future resurrection of the dead in Christ will be global, and involve the resurrection of all believers who had died in a trusting relationship with Jesus Christ. Such a release of supernatural power in a brief moment around the globe will result in massive seismic, tsunamic, and volcanic activity.

8. The opening of the sixth seal of the scroll in Revelation chapter 6 results in a global catastrophe on the earth.

Rev 6:12 Then I looked when the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and a huge earthquake took place; the sun became as black as sackcloth made of hair, and the full moon became blood red;
Rev 6:13 and the stars in the sky fell to the earth like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when shaken by a fierce wind.
Rev 6:14 The sky was split apart like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place.

After the events of the sixth seal, there is a massive group of living persons standing before the throne, described in Revelation chapter 7. The appearance of a group such as this before the throne in heaven fits perfectly with the interpretation that the resurrection of the dead in Christ and rapture had just occurred.

9. The destruction on the earth at this time would serve as a masking effect such that millions of missing persons would not be considered the rapture.

How so? Consider the recent 2010 earthquake in Haiti and 2004 earthquake and resulting tsunami in Sumatra. Tragically, many hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives in these disasters, but several hundred thousand people were never found. These “missing persons” were eventually considered to be casualties of the destruction.

Similarly, if a destructive event, of much larger magnitude and on a global scale, occurs at the resurrection of the dead in Christ and rapture event, those missing persons would simply be considered casualties in the destruction, not the disappearance of people in the rapture. The idea of the rapture occurring as portrayed in popular books and movies such as “Left Behind” may not even be a consideration.

10. According to Paul, God will send a “strong deluding influence” upon people in end times that will result on them believing something that is not true:

2Th 2:11 Consequently God sends on them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false.

This verse was written in the context of Paul expounding on the events that would take place prior to the day of Christ and the gathering of believers to himself in the rapture. Perhaps, then, the Lord will use the current expectation for destructive global events on December 21, 2012 to open the sixth seal of the scroll, resurrect the dead in Christ, and catch up believers.

What is Earthquake Resurrection? It is a model bringing to the prophetic landscape a fresh analysis of the future resurrection of the dead in Christ and the meaning of the "last trumpet" or "trumpet of God" that sounds just before the event. Earthquake Resurrection explores the possibility that the disappearance of a large group of believers worldwide, traditionally known as the rapture of the church, will be masked by global catastrophe. This possibility is based on a pattern found in scripture that the power unleashed when a human being is resurrected into an immortal body causes a shaking of the surrounding earth. The model shows that the event within the Book of Revelation at which this event takes place is the opening of the sixth seal of the scroll of seven seals in the right hand of God, in connection with the blood red moon unleashing the day of the Lord's wrath.
